The Mathematical Respiration

Cyclic Symmetry in the Decadic Summation of Integers

$[ T_n equiv T_{20-n} pmod{10} $]

A Study on the Recursive Symmetry of Last Digits in the Summation of Natural Numbers

Author: Katsunari Takada

[Abstract] When the sum of natural numbers (triangular numbers, $( T_n = sum_{k=1}^{n} k $)) is expanded as a residue class in decimal notation (( $text{mod } 10 $)), there exists a "respiration cycle" accompanied by mirror-like symmetry that transcends mere repetition. This paper elucidates the alternating cyclic structure between forward and backward directions hidden within a period of $( 20 $).

[Mathematical Definition and Recurrence] The sequence $( S = {T_n pmod{10} mid n = 0, 1, 2, dots} $) recurs infinitely with the following $( 20 $) terms as the fundamental period:

$[ 0, 1, 3, 6, 0, 5, 1, 8, 6, 5, 5, 6, 8, 1, 5, 0, 6, 3, 1, 0 $]

The most remarkable feature of this sequence lies in its symmetry centered around the midpoint ($( n=10 $)):

$[ T_n equiv T_{20-n} pmod{10} $]

Due to this characteristic, the sequence begins at $( 0 $), passes through the "point of stillness" at $( 5 $), and returns to $( 0 $) once more—drawing a "mathematical respiration," as if a living entity is inhaling and exhaling.
